"True Romance" (1993)

Yes, I've never been to Graceland

A long time ago, I have read that Quentin Tarantino makes movies, which «normal people wants to make at the of fifteen». Maybe that is why Quentin Tarantino became so popular, because everyone wants to bring back that teenage feeling. Among Tarantino projects there were quite a few tales, including «Kill Bill» duology.

Some time ago, Detroit was a center of the US automobile industry, but the Oil Shock of 1973 had hit the city pretty hard. In the 1990s, the certain neighborhoods of the Motor City began to resemble Pripyat. Nevertheless, almost all tales start in the most unusual places. And in this time, instead of Park Avenue, «True Romance» begins in some average bar.

The comics book salesman Clarence Worley wants to meet a girl. Despite this, his searches are quite fruitless because of Clarence’s unusual interests – he worships Elvis Presley and admires kung fu movies.  After Clarence got another refusal, he goes alone to Sonnie Chiba movies night.

While he is in a cinema, a very beautiful blonde Alabama sits nearby and they hit it off immediately. After the movies, they go to a diner, where Clarence even more falls in love with Alabama. Talks are transported into some very good night, but the tale is ruined by one little detail – Alabama is a call girl, who was presented to Clarence by his boss. Despite that, they fall in love with each other and decide to marry…

A good beginning, isn’t it? Who never dreamed about a blonde (or a brunette, or a ginger, decide for yourself), which likes the same things, as you? The movie continues to give us some pleasant surprises, because Quentin Tarantino has some cool crime tales, «True Romance» included. After Clarence whacked Alabama’s pimp and mistakenly gets a hold of huge amount of cocaine, they would be tailed by the mob.

What to do, if you are in trouble? Ask for somebody’s advice! I could always count on Arnold Schwarzenegger, because he never forgets his loyal fans! In case of Clarence, he could always count on his buddy Elvis Presley and this buddy would always find time for some wise counsel. Elvis advises would always help Clarence and Alabama to escape any trouble.

But what makes this fantasy film with stereotypical mobsters and coke-fueled producers so special? You could say a lot of words about cool music, but there are a lot of mediocre movies with cool music. The movie is so special because of the director.

Tony Scott was always overshadowed by his brother Ridley, but, in my opinion, Tony just didn’t have a chance to direct his own Blade Runner. As The Last Boyscout, True Romance is full of great actors, who are directed properly. We all remember Gary Oldman great work, but let’s not forget about Christopher Walken, Tom Sizemore, James Gandolfini and many others!

In closing, I have only one piece of advice – turn off your snobbery and enjoy this cool tale for grown-ups. And maybe one day you will find your very own Alabama!
